Songwriter’s Insight 21
Topical songs are part of my roots in the 1960’s: Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and many more inspired me. This song about lopsided injustice is a perfect example and my model was Bob Dylan’s from :
A dark episode in New Jersey Shore History. The Luxury Liner Morro Castle tragedy; ship burned at sea with great loss of life. Similar ship below.

Summer; summertime when we were young; so many memories; mostly care free. First romances. Friends. Exciting times. For me The Jersey Shore, New York’s Greenwich Village were significant. Running away from home immersed in an artistic time I call my “Paris Experience”; love and lovers; great opportunities lost and gained. All this before realities: Army, danger in decadence, vulnerabilities . . .
During the American Revolutionary War ships maned by “Privateers” or “Pirates” which applied was based on which side your point of view was. An English Privateer was a Pirate to the American side and an American Privateer was a Pirate to the British side.
Not far from my home is a monument to the “Privateers” who fought for The American side: Chestnut Neck, NJ: See:http://www.revolutionarywarnewjersey.com/new_jersey_revolutionary_war_sites/towns/port_republic_nj_revolutionary_war_sites.htm

This is a song that has morphed through the years: from one guitar and a simple vocal I sang in New York City (Greenwich Village) to this more elaborate version . . . still it is a simple love song at heart. “My Loves Face”.
With The Fourth of July one week away here is the legend of Molly Pitcher. Some research indicates she was a real person who served during the American Revolutionary war, others say it is a myth and still others claim the story is of a composite character. In any case as a young boy living in New Jersey my Uncle Ben (RIP) took me for a ride to the Monmouth Battle Field; he showed me a stone walled well there that he said was Molly’s source of water. Later I found out that was a well monument and not an actual well. More about the battle field park here:
Sometime even a serious minded songwriter must wright something just for fun. My Polish heritage and a neighbor’s two beagles – and she also is of Polish decent- inspired this polka ditty. VIDEO:
Many people do not know that The New Jersey Shore area had numerous events associated with the American Revolution. This song tells the story of just such historical event.
It is beyond Memorial Day weekend and droves of people will be coming down to the Jersey Shore to sunbath, swim, use their boats, go fishing and go crabbing among other shore activities. Years ago my family would gather once or twice during the summer and travel in a small caravan to Barnegat Bay in New Jersey for a day of crabbing for Blue Claw Crabs this song is the story.
There is nothing more exciting to a night owl than seeing the sunset and knowing there is an exciting night ahead. Friends and lovers meeting at a favorite club, dance venue or long anticipated concert. Even when I was heading for a gig the excitement often flooded my imagination.
